How the Instagram Reels downloader works
Every public Reel has its own link. Paste it here and SLMtik asks Instagram for the same public file your browser would play, then hands it to you as a normal MP4. There is nothing to install and you never log in, so your Instagram account is never involved. It works the same way as our TikTok and Facebook downloaders: one box, automatic detection, and a choice of files.
Instagram often stores the picture and the sound of HD Reels as two separate streams. SLMtik joins them into one MP4 for you, so the MP4 HD button gives you the full-quality video with sound, usually 1080p for Reels filmed on a modern phone.
Video, audio and cover image
| Button | What you get | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 HD | The Reel with sound, in the best quality available | Watching offline, editing your own clips |
| MP3 audio | Only the sound, as a standard MP3 | Voice-overs, lessons, your own audio |
| Cover image | The thumbnail of the Reel | Previews, mood boards, your own posts |
On iPhone, Safari saves downloads to Files → Downloads; open the video and tap Share → Save Video to move it to Photos. On Android the MP4 appears in your gallery and in the Downloads folder.
What can and cannot be saved
- Public Reels and videos: yes.
- Private accounts: no. Private posts are protected, and SLMtik never asks for your password.
- Stories and highlights: only when Instagram makes them public; most need a login and cannot be saved here.
- Deleted posts: no. If the Reel no longer plays on Instagram, it cannot be downloaded.
Instagram sometimes limits automated requests. If a public Reel does not work at first, wait a minute and try again.
Your own Reels
For your own videos you can also use Instagram's official tools. The Download option in the three-dot menu saves a Reel to your gallery, and Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information sends you an archive of everything you posted in original quality — the best route for a full backup.
Use it fairly
Download Reels you made yourself, or that the creator allows you to keep, for personal viewing. Re-posting someone else's Reel — even with credit — needs their permission, and Instagram's own terms apply to everything you save. If you are a creator and want a video blocked from SLMtik, use our copyright page.
If the Reel was first posted on TikTok, you can save the original without watermark with the TikTok downloader.
