Quick answer: Private posts are only sent to logged-in, approved followers. A downloader works from the public link, so it is shown the same error page a stranger sees. Any site that claims otherwise wants your password.
How downloaders actually work
A downloader asks the platform for the post, exactly like a browser that is not logged in. For a public post, the platform answers with the video. For a private post, it answers "you do not have access". There is no secret back door.
Is the post private?
- Open the link in a private or incognito window.
- If it asks you to log in, says "This account is private", or shows nothing, it is not public.
- If it plays there, it is public, and the problem is somewhere else, see download not working.
Other kinds of restricted posts
- Friends-only TikToks and Facebook posts
- Close Friends Instagram stories
- Age-restricted videos that require a login
- Snapchat snaps and private stories
- Videos in private groups or chats
"Private video downloader" scams
Sites that promise private downloads usually do one of three things: ask for your Instagram or TikTok password, push you to install an app or extension, or show endless "human verification" surveys. None of them deliver the video. Never type your social media password into a third-party site.
What to do instead
- Ask the creator to send you the video, or to make the post public for a moment.
- If it is your own private video, download it from the app directly, or use TikTok's data export: download all your TikTok videos.
