Quick answer: Open the Reel, tap the paper-plane (Share) icon, choose Copy link, paste it into the Instagram Reels downloader and tap Download. Only public accounts work.
The bookmark icon in Instagram does not download anything. It adds the Reel to your private "Saved" list, and that list disappears the moment the creator deletes the post or makes their account private. A downloaded MP4 is yours to keep, watch offline and edit.
Step 1: copy the Reel link
- In the app (iPhone and Android): open the Reel, tap the paper-plane icon, then Copy link. Some app versions hide it behind the three dots (…) menu.
- On a computer: open the Reel on instagram.com and copy the address from the browser bar. It looks like
instagram.com/reel/AbC123…/.
A link that starts with instagram.com/stories/ is a story, not a Reel. Profile links (instagram.com/username) do not point to a single video, so they will not work.
Step 2: paste and download
Open the Reels downloader, tap Paste and then Download. You will see the available qualities. Pick the highest one unless you need a smaller file for messaging.
Where the file goes
- iPhone and iPad: Safari saves it to Files → Downloads. Open it, tap the Share icon and choose Save Video to put it in Photos.
- Android: Chrome saves to the Downloads folder, and it shows up in Gallery or Google Photos under "Download".
- Windows, Mac and Chromebook: it lands in your Downloads folder.
Only want the music?
Use the Instagram to MP3 tool with the same link. You get the audio as an MP3 that plays in any music app. For the still frame that Instagram shows on the grid, use the Instagram thumbnail downloader.
Why a Reel will not download
- The account is private. No outside tool can see private posts, and anything that claims it can is unsafe.
- The Reel was deleted or archived. Open the link in a private browser window to check that it still plays.
- The link is cut off. Some chat apps shorten long links. Copy it again straight from Instagram.
- It is a collab or ad post. These sometimes have restricted media. Try the original creator's copy.
Quality
Instagram usually stores Reels at 720p or 1080p in a 9:16 frame. A downloader cannot add detail that was never uploaded, so be wary of sites that promise 4K Reels. If you plan to repost, keep the original resolution and do not re-export it more than once.
Respect the creator
Saving a Reel to watch later is personal use. Re-uploading someone else's Reel as your own breaks Instagram's rules and copyright law. If you share it, ask first and credit the creator, see how to credit creators.
