Quick answer: Most TikTok videos are stored at 1080p or 720p, so 1080p is the best real quality. Choose 1080p for big screens and editing, and 720p for chat apps and saving space. "4K" downloads of a 1080p source are just stretched and larger.
Downloader sites love big numbers: 4K, 8K, "ultra HD". The truth is simpler. A download can only be as good as the file TikTok stores, and TikTok stores a limited set of versions of each video.
What TikTok stores
TikTok re-encodes every upload. Most videos are kept at 1080 × 1920 (1080p) and 720 × 1280 (720p), plus smaller versions for slow connections. A few creators can upload in higher resolution, but the copy most people see is 1080p at best. If the creator uploaded at 720p, 720p is the ceiling.
Why "4K" downloads are usually fake
If the source is 1080p, a "4K" download is the same image stretched four times larger. It looks no sharper and the file is two to three times bigger. SLMtik only lists the qualities that really exist for each video.
Which one to pick
| You want to… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Send it on WhatsApp or Telegram | 720p |
| Watch on a laptop or TV | 1080p |
| Edit it in CapCut or Premiere | 1080p |
| Save space on a full phone | 720p, or MP3 for audio only |
| Use frames as still images | 1080p |
How much space each takes
A 30-second video is roughly 4–6 MB at 720p and 8–15 MB at 1080p. A 100-video collection of 1080p clips fits in about 1 GB. Fast motion, confetti and grain make files bigger; a talking head against a plain wall makes them smaller.
Why some downloads look soft
- The creator filmed in low light, so the camera added noise and blur.
- They used heavy beauty filters, which smooth detail.
- The video is a screen recording of another video, which loses quality each time.
- The creator uploaded over a weak connection and TikTok kept a lower version.
No downloader can add detail back. Try another upload of the same clip, ideally the creator's original.
For your own uploads
To give your own TikToks the best quality, film in 1080p at 30 fps, upload on Wi-Fi, and switch on "Upload HD" in TikTok's settings under Data Saver. That way, downloads of your video — by you or your fans — come out sharp.
